AB OBJECTIVE: Characterize heterosexual transmission in women over 10 years
of age in the state of SP, Brazil. METHODS: 2759 cases of AIDS notified
in the state of Sao Paulo from 1983 to July 1992 were revised. RESULTS:
Of the 1224 (44.4%) that referred heterosexual relations, 176 (14.4%)
had multiple partnership, 188 (15.4%) had a HIV+ partner, 86 (7%) had a
bisexual partner, 17 (2.5%) had a hemophiliac/blood receptor partner,
115 (9.4%) had a partner of multiple partnership, and 423 (34.5%) had a
intravenous drug user partner. Other information was not specified for
219 (17.9%) heterosexual women. For 536 (43.8%) women, there was only
one sexual partner. In 1986 bisexual partnership represented 7.6% of
heterosexual associated cases, while intravenous drug user partnership
represented 10%. In 1992 this figure goes to 5.3% and 38.5%
respectively. CONCLUSION: The different aspects of heterosexual practice
as a risk factor shows that partnership with intravenous drug user is of
great importance in the development of the epidemic, while partnership
with a bisexual seems to have a less important role.
